Window Seat: The Last Receipt

By Abigail Hilton

I found it in the pocket of a camel trench coat I almost donated. A folded white slip, corners fraying.

A receipt from Nordstrom sparks memories of a shopping ritual, contrasting with today’s fleeting online purchases.

I found it in the pocket of a camel trench coat I almost donated. A folded white slip, corners fraying, ink faded just enough to make me squint.

Nordstrom, Walnut Creek. $226.47.

No context. No itemized list. Just the date — a spring afternoon five years ago. I remembered the shoes. Tan leather, low heel, walkable. I wore them to at least three job interviews, one wedding, and the kind of funeral where you’re told to wear something “hopeful.” I don’t remember what I wore to the store, but I remember the lighting. The warm kind that made everything — even decisions — look good.

“We used to shop in moments. Now we shop in motion.”

It was a Thursday. I had met my sister for lunch at Tender Greens, and we walked the concourse like we always did — with intention. Macy’s for something basic. Sephora for something unserious. Nordstrom for the thing that would change our lives, if only briefly. That day, it was shoes. We tried on five pairs each. We took pictures. We laughed too loudly. It felt like a ritual. Like we were still part of something.

That mall has changed now. Nordstrom is still there — technically — but it’s not the same. The café is gone, replaced by a sterile food court. The perfume floor feels like an afterthought, the escalators creak, and the shoppers seem distracted, scrolling phones instead of browsing racks. The magic of that warm lighting has dimmed, overshadowed by the glow of screens.

“It wasn’t just a transaction. It was proof of presence.”

When I pulled the receipt from the coat, it felt heavier than it should have. It wasn’t just a transaction. It was proof of presence. Of time spent. Of a version of myself that walked into a store and walked out with something that carried forward. That doesn’t happen much anymore.

Now, I scroll. I tap. I buy. I forget. The confirmation email fades under thirty more by morning. I rarely remember what I ordered until the box arrives. The box isn’t the moment. The moment is already lost.

There’s no fixing this — not in the nostalgic sense. But maybe there’s a way forward. Maybe receipts become journals. Maybe the things we buy find new value in who we become while wearing them. Maybe we keep a few more of them — not for bookkeeping, but for remembering.

I kept the coat. And the receipt.
